Chiropractic: Keeping Your Spine Healthy

A Subluxation is a chiropractic term that refers to a misalignment of the vertebrae, generally of a minor nature. In essence, a vertebra that is not properly aligned with the other vertebrae creates pressure on or stretches the nerves in the spinal cord and the nerves around the spine. This increases the likelihood that nerve signals will not be transmitted properly and can cause pain.

Subluxations, cervical or otherwise, can have a number of causes, including trauma from an automobile accident, falling, poor lifting techniques and bad posture.

Chiropractors can correct subluxations through a manual adjustment and exercises to be followed at home. During the actual adjustment a popping sound may be heard as the vertabrea are re-aligned. The realigned vertebrea relives the pressure on the sorrounding nearve thus providing relief of pain in the area.

Why an adjustment is done

Most often people seek chiropractic adjustment as a remedy for pain conditions, including:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headache

Each year in the United States, 1 in 4 adults experiences low back pain — a condition that can be frustrating and difficult to treat. Low back pain is the main reason why people seek chiropractic care. Research shows that chiropractic adjustment may offer mild to moderate relief from low back pain. In some studies, chiropractic adjustment proved to be as effective as other, more conventional treatments.

Chiropractic care is an outgrowth of belief in these concepts:

  • Your body has a natural and powerful ability to heal itself.
  • Your body's structure — bones, joints and muscles — and capacity for healthy function are closely intertwined.
  • Chiropractic treatment helps balance your body's structure and function and promotes self-healing.

Chiropractic was developed in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer. He found that by working with the spine to remove fixations, could also give substantial pain relief. While Chiropractic has been predominately used as a way to relieve neck and back pain, it has also become a way of pursuing health and well being for many.

Most people don't know that chiropractors are "real doctors" just like medical doctors are "real doctors". Chiropractors have over 4,000 hours of post-graduate doctoral education. Chiropractors have to take National Board Exams and also pass State Board Examinations as well. Each state has a chiropractic board that regulates chiropractic. The laws for what a chiropractor's scope of practice are different from state to state. In some states, chiropractors can do injections and minor surgery. As part of the educational process, chiropractors are trained to do gynecological exams, prostate exams, radiographic exams, pre-natal and infant delivery, signing birth and death certificates etc... While trained in all of these areas (and licensed to treat), most chiropractors elect to treat conditions such as neck and back pain.

Chiropractic is and should be part of every person's overall health regimen. By creating better motion in the spine, it helps the joints of the spine stay healthier longer and delays the onset of the degenerative processes that often affect the spine.
